Hypertension is a highly prevalent non-commun ica ble disease (NCO) worldwide. Common risk factors for hypertension a t the industrial work environment in c lude lou d noises , chemical solvents , volatile chemical liquids , gases, and temperature variations.While hypertension is well known to lower the quality of life and performance of workers at hazardous ind ustria l en vironments, the relations hip between occupational risk factors and hypertens io n has not been studied in Kuwait. Thus, the objective of the present study is to explore and quantify the rela tionship between occupationa l risk factors as well as other related risk factors and hypertension among patient workers (n=7892) at Shuaiba in dustrial, med ica l center (SIM C) between 2014 and 2018. This was a cross-sectiona l st udy using convenient samp li ng method. Anonymous data of workers between the years 2014 - 20 18 was extracted from the medical database of SIMC inclu ding patient characteristics , occ upat iona l e xposures and hypertensive' status, whic h were analyzed us in g classica l bivariate and Bayes ia n mu ltiva riate sta tis tica l a pproaches. Category age (31-40 , O R=5.3, 95% CI= 3.6 -7 .8) , 41-50 (OR= l 8.7 , 95% CI= l 2.9-27.2), 51-60 (OR=39.7, 95%=27.3 -56.5), 61-> 70 (OR=53.4, 95% CI= 34. l -8 l. 5) as well as occ upa tional category (Professional/senior management (OR=2.5, 95% Cl= l. 5-4.0) were sig nifica ntly related to hypertension. Add itio nally, nationality (being Arab (OR=0.3, 95% CI= 0.2-0.5) , Asian (OR=0.4, 95% CI= 0.3 -0 .7), Occupation (having othe r job (OR=0.4, 95% CI= 0.3-0.7) as well as type (Confined space (OR=0.8, 95% CI= 0.6 - 0 .9) have a significantly lower risk of having hypertension. Other jobs included science /medica l jobs, agric ultural, fishin g, sailing , diving , cooking and hunting jobs, cooking , c leaning , house keep in g and waiter jobs and other servic e workers as well as firefighting, police men , detectives , aircraft ship officers. No significant relationship with occ upational factors was found. The res ults of this study ma y help in guidin g the direction of effective risk-based inter vention s trategie s for hypertens ion , which can subseque ntly he lp in im proving thequa li ty of the working environment and performance o f the workers at SIMC. |
